The Art of Hojicha

Hojicha was born in Kyoto in the 1920s, when a tea merchant began roasting leftover tea stems and leaves over charcoal to reduce waste. The result was so delicious — so warm and comforting — that it became one of Japan's most beloved teas. Today, authentic Hojicha is still roasted at high heat, which caramelizes the natural sugars in the leaf, reduces bitterness and caffeine, and creates that unmistakable toasty aroma that fills the room the moment you open the bag.

How to Brew

• Traditional Hot (Usucha style): Sift 1–2 teaspoons into a bowl or mug, add 2oz of hot water (175–185°F), whisk until smooth, then top with 6oz of hot water. Sip and exhale.
