From the Highlands of the Last Frontier.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most remote, biodiverse, and extraordinary places on earth — a land of ancient rainforests, active volcanoes, and highland valleys so isolated that some communities had no contact with the outside world until the 20th century. It is also home to some of the most distinctive and underappreciated specialty coffee on the planet. Grown by small agricultural cooperatives in the rugged Chimbu Province highlands, on volcanic loam soils that have been enriched by millennia of eruptions, this coffee carries the wild, untamed character of its homeland in every cup.
Caramel warmth. Honey sweetness. A bright, fruity complexity. This is PNG — unlike anything else in your cup.
What's Inside
- Bourbon (~50%) — one of the world's most celebrated heirloom Arabica varieties, brought to Papua New Guinea in the early 20th century and thriving in the island's unique highland terroir. In PNG's volcanic soils and equatorial highland climate, Bourbon develops a rich, naturally sweet complexity with a full, rounded body and the gentle fruit character that makes it so universally beloved by specialty roasters worldwide.
- Typica (~50%) — the oldest and most historically significant Arabica variety in the world; the genetic ancestor of most modern coffee varieties, Typica was among the first varieties introduced to Papua New Guinea and has adapted beautifully to the Chimbu highlands over generations. It contributes a clean, elegant sweetness, a silky body, and the refined, classic coffee character that provides the structural backbone of this blend.
- Fully Washed Processing — coffee cherries are pulped, fermented to remove the mucilage, and washed clean in fresh water — a meticulous process that produces the crystal-clear fruit expression, clean sweetness, and bright complexity that allows the Bourbon and Typica varieties to express themselves fully
- Sun Dried — after washing, beans are dried slowly under the equatorial highland sun, allowing the natural warmth and airflow of the Chimbu highlands to bring the beans to perfect moisture content while preserving their delicate honey and fruit notes
Origin Details
- 🌍 Grower: Small agricultural cooperatives in Chimbu — smallholder farming families working together across the rugged Chimbu Province highlands, where the terrain is so steep and remote that much of the farming and harvesting is still done entirely by hand, with coffee cherries carried down mountain paths on foot to reach processing stations
- 📍 Region: Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea — in the heart of the PNG Highlands, Chimbu (also known as Simbu) is one of the country's most celebrated coffee-growing regions, where the dramatic mountain landscape, rich volcanic soils, and cool highland climate create ideal conditions for producing complex, full-bodied Arabica
- ⛰️ Altitude: 1,350 meters above sea level — the highland elevation slows cherry development and concentrates the natural sugars and aromatic compounds that give this coffee its distinctive caramel sweetness and fruit complexity
- 🪨 Soil: Volcanic Loam — one of the most fertile soil types on earth; the volcanic loam of the Chimbu highlands is rich in minerals, organic matter, and natural nutrients deposited by centuries of volcanic activity, contributing directly to the coffee's full body, natural sweetness, and complex flavor development
- 💧 Process: Fully Washed & Sun Dried — producing the clean fruit expression and natural sweetness that defines great PNG coffee
Tasting Profile
- 🍮 Caramel Warmth — rich, buttery, and deeply satisfying; the volcanic loam terroir expressing itself in the most indulgent way
- 🍯 Honey Sweetness — floral, golden, and naturally sweet; the Typica variety's signature elegance shining through
- 🍊 Bright Fruit Complexity — a lively, tropical fruit character — stone fruit, citrus, and a hint of tropical sweetness — that adds vibrancy and makes this coffee genuinely exciting
- 🌊 Full, Rounded Body — substantial and satisfying, with the smooth, velvety texture of well-processed highland Arabica
- ✨ Long, Sweet Finish — the caramel and honey notes lingering beautifully, with a clean, fruit-forward aftertaste that evolves as the cup cools
Roast & Brew
- Roast Level: Medium
- Best For: Pour-over and drip brewing methods that highlight the fruit and honey complexity; also exceptional as a French press where the full body and caramel sweetness are amplified, and outstanding as cold brew where the tropical fruit notes become even more pronounced
- Pro Tip: PNG coffee is one of the most versatile single-origins in the world — approachable enough for everyday drinking, complex enough to reward careful attention. Try it black first to experience the full caramel and fruit character before adding milk.
